February Subjects Updates:
Math:
We will continue our study of grouping and sharing in Math class for the first week in February. The second week will take us into Fractions/Money. We will be focusing on the practical applications of understanding and using Fractions concepts and Money. This is a great time to take your child grocery shopping, as estimating sums and products is something we've practiced in class (rounding to the nearest dollar).

Language Arts:
In February, we will continue with constructing whole stories. Our writing focus will emphasize organization, sentence variety, detail, and mechanics. We will continue applying COPS (Capitalization, Organization, Punctuation, and Spelling) editing strategy to all of our written work. There will also be an emphasis on enriching our writing with Literary Devices (ie. personification, metaphors, similes).
We are continuing to work on building Spelling, Grammar, and Handwriting skills. Please keep on studying for our Spelling tests! It makes a big difference!
Please continue to work on Reading Across Canada. The holidays are an excellent time to get lots of reading done! Mileage Chart across Canada.pdf
Social Studies:
February 5 will be our World's Fair, the culmination of our work and study about world nations. Students may bring national clothing along to wear for the fair (they should not wear it to school). Otherwise, please do not send along any special items on that day (like food or artefacts) as we don't want precious items lost in the excitement. Special items may be brought along on the day that your student presents their country to their own class (TBA). Parents may attend this alternate day if they cannot attend the day of the World's Fair. Grade Three parents and family members are especially invited to attend the World's Fair on Feb. 5 from 10:35 - 11:25. It will take place in the Art room. Please check in at the Office before you come in.

Art:
Our Art time has been integrated with Social Studies as we prepare artful postcards and travel "stickers" to decorate our suitcases.
Christian Education (H. Teichrob):
This month we will be begin a new unit on the miracles of Jesus. We will begin by looking at the story of the wedding at Cana (John. 2:1-11). Students will identify Scripture verses that promise God’s provision and complete a prayer for increased faith. Next we will study Mark 5:1-20 and learn about Christ’s victory and authority over the enemy. We will end the month by looking at Matthew 14:13-21 (Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand). Here students will learn that everyone is created with a spiritual hunger that only Christ can fill. Students will complete a short quiz on our last unit of study (the parables of Jesus) during the week of February 8-10. Study pages will be sent home ahead of time, and class time will be devoted to review of the material.
In addition, students are reminded that the term two bonus passage (I Corinthians 13:1-7) is to be recited by Friday, February 5th, if credit is to be given for the next report card.

Science (J. McGregor):
We have completed our unit on Rocks and Minerals and enjoyed a great fieldtrip to the Rocks and Minerals and Aboriginal Galleries at the Glenbow Museum. We will now begin a new unit entitled “Animal Life Cycles”. Students will be studying the characteristics and life cycles of the various animal groups.
